Sketching the Cypriot world in the early and middle Bronze Age.
The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation invites you online to watch the new episode/lecture in the “Let’s talk history” series of events. Available from 23 April, the new lecture is titled “The Cypriot world during the early and middle Bronze Age” and will be delivered by Dr Maria Dikomitou-Eliadou.
Theme:
The presentation aims to sketch the world of Cyprus during the early and middle Bronze Age (25th to 17th centuries BC), a time period during which the island transited to an urban way of life and the trade taking place between the various city-states dotting the eastern Mediterranean in the late Bronze Age. The lecture will present the material culture of the time periods in question, referencing the island’s natural resources, the economy and society, the customs and traditions of the inhabitants, as well as their overseas contacts.
Speaker’s short bio:
Dr Maria Dikomitou-Eliadou received her BA in History and Archaeology from the University of Cyprus in 2003. She was awarded an MA in Mediterranean Archaeology by the University of Bristol in 2004, and then a second MA in Artefact Studies by University College London in 2005. From 2009 to 2017 she worked as a Special Scientist, and later as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cyprus Department of History and Archaeology. Between 2018 to 2020 she conducted research (Marie Skłodowska – Curie postdoctoral fellow) at the UCL Institute of Archaeology.
Currently Dikomitou-Eliadou works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus, part of the research programme titled “Giving life to ancient museum collections: An interdisciplinary ceramics study from the Cypriot Iron Age polities of Salamis, Soloi, Lapithos and Chytroi.” Her research focuses on an interdisciplinary, technological study of ceramic artefacts (tableware, transport, storage and cooking pots, terracotta figurines) from different time periods in Cyprus. She is actively engaged in a number of EU-funded research programmes, and has published studies and articles in reputable scientific periodicals and collections.
“Let’s talk history” is a scientifically documented and user-friendly lecture series, featuring prestigious scientists who focus on various Cyprological subjects relating to museums, collections, exhibitions and actions of the Cultural Foundation, but also more broadly to all periods of Cypriot history, archaeology, art history and literature.
The lectures are presented regularly on the Cultural Foundation’s Facebook page @boccf, on the Bank’s website at www.boccf.org, and on other audiostreaming platforms(Buzzsprout, Spotify, Google Podcasts: “Let’s talk history”).
