The School of Medicine of European University Cyprus (EUC) was this year invited to participate in the traditional ceremony of the recitation of the Hippocratic Oath by the top graduates of the Medical Schools of Greece, which took place at the Hippocratic Melathron of the International Hippocratic Foundation on the island of Kos on Saturday 17 October 2020.
The School of Medicine of European University Cyprus is the only institution outside Greece that was invited to participate in the ceremony and this is the first time that such an invitation was awarded to a School abroad.
Due to the special conditions prevailing worldwide due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ceremony took place this year with both a physical presence and online, with the participation of the top students of the seven Medical Schools of Greece and the EUC School of Medicine. The event was also participated by the Rectors or Deans of the Medical Schools, as well as representatives of local authorities and medical associations, and distinguished scientists.
The event also included the screening of a video from the Asclepieion of Kos and the ceremony of the Hippocratic Oath, followed by a representation of the Oath of Hippocrates at the grounds of the Foundation by Mr. Minas Hadjiantoniou, in the presence of the top graduate of EUC School of Medicine, Filippos Manolopoulos.
Subsequently, diplomas were awarded online to the Graduates of the following Universities: National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Patras, University of Ioannina, University of Crete, University of Thessaly, Democritus University of Thrace, and European University Cyprus.
On behalf of the School of Medicine of European University Cyprus, its Dean, Professor Elizabeth Johnson, stated that “the transition of graduates to the professional arena implies a profound awareness of the commitment they have undertaken to function as ambassadors of the moral values, scientific resilience, innovation and excellence that govern the structure and operation of European University Cyprus School of Medicine”.
The Governing Board of the International Hippocratic Foundation stressed that the main goal is to disseminate knowledge about the Ancient roots of Medicine and to transmit the values of Hippocratic Medicine to today’s and tomorrow’s doctors of the international community and medical associations around the world. Based on the above principles of Excellence, it stressed that the concept of health tourism and the health program for travellers are promoted worldwide, in the best way for Kos.
