The Rector of European University Cyprus, Professor Kostas Gouliamos, accepting the invitation of the President of Lanzhou City University/China, Professor Xuejun Wang, was one of the keynote speakers at the online International Conference of the World “University Alliance for the Belt & Road Initiative”.
Lanzhou City University – a historic Chinese Universities founded in 1907-, hosted and organized the significant symposium in which universities from Europe, Asia and North America participated.
It is worth noting that the World “University Alliance for the Belt & Road” was formed in 2015; it consists of 173 universities, from 27 countries around the world.
The European University of Cyprus – recognizing the importance of the Belt & Road Initiative – is the only university from Cyprus and Greece, which participates as a member of this “University Alliance” since its foundation in 2015.
In his keynote speech, Rector Kostas Gouliamos has noted, “by deepening and strengthening cooperation, academic societies have a marvelous opportunity to advance the essential principles of the Belt and Road Initiative such as a ‘global community of shared future for humanity’ and, consequently, they make stronger the global community`s access to new scientific, cultural and educational developments”.
The Belt & Road Initiative is a transcontinental long-term policy program in many domains (including education), which aims at infrastructure development and acceleration of the economic and cultural integration of countries along the route of the historic Silk Road. The Initiative was unveiled in 2013 by China`s president Xi Jinping. Cyprus remains committed to further broadening the areas of cooperation with China under the Belt & Road Initiative.
