An International Interdisciplinary Conference for the study of Multiscale Physical and Biological Systems using supercomputers was held with great success in Paphos, between the 22nd and the 26th of November 2021.
The Conference was organised in the context of the European Joint Doctorate project “STIMULATE” (SimulaTIon in MUltiscaLe physicAl and biological sysTEms), which is coordinated by The Cyprus Institute, and a Doctoral project funded by the Research and Innovation Foundation, coordinated by the University of Cyprus.
The Conference featured talks by leading scientists in research fields, such as Computational Biology, Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Molecular Simulations of materials and protein structure, as well as Mathematic Modelling and Algorithms for High-Performance Computing. Students had the chance to present their work through talks and scientific posters.
The prize for the best scientific poster was awarded to Stavros Athanasiou, a Master’s student at the University of Copenhagen. Material from the Conference, including recorded presentations, is available online through the conference’s webpage.
The participants were mainly from Cyprus, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United States of America, Switzerland, Italy, Israel, Lebanon and Egypt, and the talks were given in person and online.
The Conference started with a welcome talk by the coordinator of the “STIMULATE” project, Prof. Constantia Alexandrou, Director of the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC) of The Cyprus Institute, and Professor at the Department of Physics of the University of Cyprus. In addition to the scientific talks, the Conference included a talk about innovation and the ecosystem required to transfer scientific knowledge to innovative applications.
