The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation invites you to watch online the new episode of the “Talk to me Historically” series, titled “The visit of the Italian governor of the Dodecanese, Mario Lago, to Cyprus (1927)”. Dr Thomas Papageorgiou will give this new lecture which, as of the 9th of July, will be added to the online action.
Lecture topic:
The lecture presents the visit of Mario Lago, governor of the Dodecanese, to Cyprus in October 1927, along with the visit’s aftermath. In a clear demonstration of national solidarity between the conquered parts of Hellenism, the Italian governor was on the receiving end of the cold indifference of the Greeks of Cyprus and their strong protests against the oppressive policy then imposed on the Dodecanese by fascist Italy. The Greek Cypriots’ stance was highly praised across Greece.
Short resume of the speaker:
Thomas Papageorgiou holds a PhD from the Department of History and Archaeology of the School of Philosophy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His research interests focus on the history of the Cypriot unionist movement, with special emphasis on the Interwar period, mainly the 1930s. His PhD thesis, titled “The Cypriot unionist movement in Athens, 1931-1940: British reactions and the stance of the Greek governments”, was published in 2015 (En typis Publications). He has published studies in scientific journals in Cyprus and Greece. He has worked as Special Scientist at the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus. Since 2016 he works as a Philologist in Secondary Education.
