Lecture theme:

This presentation looks at a widely known, emblematic albeit derelict building within the buffer zone in Nicosia. Ledra Palace, since its construction in 1949 to this day has been inextricably linked to the contemporary, turbulent history of Cyprus. Much more than a luxury hotel, Ledra Palace reflects some of the most significant moments in the island’s contemporary political history, starting from the early 1950s, but it is also a place where Cyprus emerged as cosmopolitan and multicultural. The presentation will include references to the Ledra Palace: Dancing on the Line exhibition, until recently hosted at the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia.

Short résumé of the speaker:

Dr Antigone Heraclidou is a Historian (University of Cyprus, LSE (MSc) IComS, University of London, PhD). She is the author of Imperial Control in Cyprus: Education and Political Manipulation in the British Empire, (London: I.B. Tauris 2017) and the co-editor (with Anastasia Yiangou) of Cyprus from Colonialism to the Present: Visions and Realities. Essays in honour of Professor Robert Holland, (London: Routledge, 2017). Since 2019 she is a Research Associate at RISE Centre of Excellence.
