Hellenic Bank has been actively supporting “Eco-Schools” the largest global sustainable schools programme since 1998, which starts in the classroom and expands to the community by engaging the next generation in action – based learning. The programme is carried out in conjunction with CYMEPA and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth.
The programme’s aim is to raise awareness, educate and change student’s attitudes towards the environment. A participatory approach assists in the decision making, in the design and execution of various activities, to help schools integrate sustainability principles throughout their schools.
This year planned activities, include among others, a webinar at schools about the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a pancyprian award ceremony for all schools. Additionally, in October a big event will take place at My Mall in Limassol, during which environmental organisations and foundations will raise public awareness on environmental issues and responsible behaviour and actions towards sustainability.
The programme’s greatest accomplishment is undeniably the fact that it maps the foundations for the tomorrow’s environmentally conscious citizens. Hellenic Bank, a vital Eco-Schools driving force, is immensely sensitive towards environmental matters and is constantly investing in environmental activities, recognising the connection between economic growth and the environment.
Hellenic Bank has been supporting “Eco-Schools” in Cyprus for more than 20 years and through various events and activities (painting competitions, international conferences participations, visits to environmentally protected sites and others) contributes to increasing environmental awareness in schools.
Hellenic Bank has cemented its position as a pioneer with concerns on the environment and issues surrounding our planet, actively doing its part to minimise long-term climate change. Most recently, Hellenic Bank has joined the MasterCard Priceless Planet Coalition, a common global platform aiming to coordinate the environmental actions of consumers, financial institutions, merchants, and cities. In this context, it’s the first bank to issue environmentally friendly credit cards in Cyprus using eco-friendly, biodegradable materials and will contribute to the global forest restoration. In addition, Hellenic Bank encourages its customers to apply for e-Statements to reduce paper waste in collaboration with the Department of Forests, participates in voluntary activities such as “Let’s Do It Cyprus” and tree planting projects, offers loans to businesses with a positive environmental impact and utilising the ISO50001:2018 certification, Hellenic Bank will integrate all its buildings in the energy management system by February 2022.
