Frederick University participates in one of eight Communities of Practice seeking to advance gender equality within the framework of a European project entitled ACT-on-gender.

The HORIZON 2020 project aims to implement gender equality plans at universities, research centres and research funding organisations through eight Communities of Practice.  These Communities act as agents that facilitate collaboration between experienced institutions in the implementation of gender equality plans and less experienced ones. The aim is to improve assessment on gender equality issues in three areas: gender balance in career progression, gender balance in decision-making positions, and integrating the gender dimension into research content and teaching.

Frederick University is part of the Community of Practice for Gender Equality in Central and Eastern Europe, along with universities and research centres in Poland, Lithuania and other countries.  According to Dr Petroula Mavrikiou, Associate Professor at the Department of Business Administration of Frederick University that runs the project: “It’s important for us to integrate the gender dimension in all areas: to address gender imbalances in decision-making processes, strengthen the participation of women in the field of research and ensure that there is no gender bias in human resource management.

Frederick University’s participation in this project demonstrates its interest in assessing and further improving the above practices. Our University has already conducted a survey, the results of which are evaluated within the framework of ACT-on-gender.”  Natassa Frederickou, President of Frederick University’s Council, said in a statement: “Frederick University has a long history of acting on gender equality issues. Our participation in projects like ACT-on-gender is both rewarding and empowering. Moreover, our internal policies ensure equal opportunities for all Frederick University employees.” Natassa Frederickou also notes: “Working towards a better world is the core of our strategy.

Gender equality is a pillar of this strategy which is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. We promote these goals in all possible ways, through actions inside and outside the University.” The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Spain is the coordinator of the project. Jagiellonian University in Poland coordinates the Community of Practice for Gender Equality in Central and Eastern Europe.  Follow these links to learn more about the project: https://geincee.act-on-gender.eu/members/institutions and https://act-on-gender.eu/community-mapping.
